Can You Buy a Seat Cushion With NDIS Funding? A Guide for Australian Participants

Can Disability Funding Help Pay for a Seat Cushion in New Zealand?

Can Disability Funding Help Pay for a Seat Cushion in New Zealand?

Some disabled people in New Zealand receive funded equipment or use person-directed funding to purchase supports that relate to their assessed needs. A retail seat cushion is not automatically funded, but seating equipment may be considered through the appropriate pathway.

This guide explains the main routes, what to confirm before ordering and how Spinely® can provide product and invoice information.

The short answer: Funding may be possible when a seating product is connected to an assessed disability-related need and permitted under the person’s funding arrangement. Do not purchase on the assumption that reimbursement is guaranteed. Confirm the item and process with your assessor, host, Needs Assessment and Service Coordination service or funding contact first.

Which Funding Pathway May Apply?

Disability Support Services equipment and aids

Disability Support Services may provide free or subsidised equipment through Equipment and Modification Services. An EMS-qualified assessor can identify the equipment that suits your needs, consider the most cost-effective option and determine whether funding may be available.

Start with the official equipment and aids guidance. Your doctor, local hospital community health service, Needs Assessment service, Enable New Zealand or Accessable may help connect you with an assessor.

Flexible or Individualised Funding

Some people have hosted flexible funding, Individualised Funding or an Enabling Good Lives personal budget. Purchases must follow the person’s funding plan and the current purchasing policy. Speak with your host or funding contact before buying a retail product.

Read the official Individualised Funding guidance and DSS purchasing policy information.

Injury-related support

If the need relates to an injury, a different pathway may apply. DSS eligibility excludes disability support already covered by ACC, so ask your health professional or funding contact which organisation should assess the need.

What Should You Confirm Before Ordering?

  • Is the product directly connected to your assessed disability-related need?
  • Is equipment purchase permitted within your funding plan or service?
  • Do you need an EMS-qualified assessor or other professional recommendation?
  • Must the item be sourced through an approved supplier or service?
  • What invoice, quote or product information must be supplied?
  • Should approval be obtained before payment?

Important: Spinely® cannot decide whether a purchase is eligible or guarantee funding or reimbursement. Approval depends on the person’s assessed needs, funding arrangement and the rules in effect at the time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Spinely® products approved by DSS or EMS?

There is no general approval that makes an ordinary retail product funded for everyone. Eligibility depends on the person, assessment, funding route and current rules.

Can I buy directly and claim the cost afterwards?

Do not assume reimbursement will be available. Some pathways require assessment, prior agreement or sourcing through a particular service. Confirm before purchasing.

Do I need an assessment?

The EMS pathway uses qualified assessors. Other flexible funding arrangements may have different requirements, so check with your host or funding contact.

Does an invoice guarantee payment?

No. An invoice supports record-keeping but does not establish eligibility or guarantee reimbursement.
